Bejtic Trial Postponed, Prosecutor and Defense Attorney Fail to Appear in Court

The trial of Samir Bejtic was postponed after both the prosecutor and defense attorney failed to appear at today’s hearing at the cantonal court of Sarajevo. Bejtic has been charged with committing war crimes in Kazani, near Sarajevo.

Judge Jasenko Ruzic said he had been informed by the cantonal prosecution in Sarajevo that the prosecutor couldn’t appear at the hearing. He also said the invitation to the hearing hadn’t been properly delivered to defense attorney Fahrija Karkin. Bejtic said that according to his knowledge, Karkin was in Switzerland.In July 2015, the Supreme Court of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina repealed an acquittal granted to Bejtic by the cantonal court of Sarajevo. The case was referred back to the cantonal court of Sarajevo for a retrial.The trial has been renewed several times thus far. Bejtic was extradited to Bosnia and Herzegovina from Germany 13 years ago.The trial will continue on February 11, 2016.
