As announced by the Track Impunity Always (TRIAL) Association, the revisions to the criminal law of Bosnia and Herzegovina introduces forcible disappearance as a new crime and provides a clear definition of torture.
“Following years of advocacy to promote the respect of human rights in our country, the state parliament delegates have finally undertaken some concrete steps. We support this action and call on them to continue supporting the rule of law, particularly in cases about war crimes, so we can prevent perpetrators from going unpunished,” Selma Korjenic of the TRIAL said.
As announced by TRIAL, this set of revisions represents a decisive step towards improving the prosecution of accused war criminals because the state law has finally been harmonized with the international standards.
“This is an important moment for Bosnia and Herzegovina, which has finally harmonized the state criminal law with the international standards on rapes committed during the times of war, as well as torture and forcible disappearances. This reduces the space for impunity for crimes already committed, but also prevents commission of crimes in the future,” said TRIAL legal adviser Adrijana Hanusic.
