Jovo Elez told the Court that he was taken to the Central Prison in mid 1992 and that he was beaten up in the prison. Some time later the witness and some other prisoners were transported to “Viktor Bubanj” military barracks.

“There were two rows of soldiers. As we got out of the minivan, they hit some of us. When we entered the ‘Viktor Bubanj’ barracks, they told us to spread our legs and stand against the wall. We were hit then. I was hit on my hip area,” he said.

After that he was taken to a room in order to be examined by the Manager. Elez said that he used to see Ramiz in “Viktor Bubanj”, adding that he thought that he was either manager of commander of the prison.

Crimes committed in the Central Prison and former “Viktor Bubanj” military barracks are charged upon Ramiz Avdovic and Iulian-Nicolae Vintila. They are charged with having participated in the establishment and maintenance of a system for abuse of Serb civilians.

According to the charges, Avdovic was Commander of guards on the fifth floor of the District Prison in Sarajevo and former “Viktor Bubanj” military barracks, while Vintila was a cook and guard in the former barracks.

Elez said that, during his detention he was sentenced for illegal possession of weapons. He said that guards treated him in a good manner, but guard Kemo beat some of the prisoners.

“Odzakovic Nedeljko was detained. He used to be beaten by Kemo,” the witness said.

Testifying at this hearing, Mirjana Odzakovic, Nedeljko Odzakovic’s sister, said that she found out that her brother was arrested and taken to “Viktor Bubanj” in July 1992.

“I heard that, in December guards took him outside and poured water on him, so he got sick. He died. His body was delivered in January 1993,” the witness said.

The trial is due to continue on November 8.
