The judge told the court in the town of Bihac that Stricevic, who was found guilty of participating in the murder of the two prisoners in June 1992, had acted with “direct premeditation to take their lives”.

The victims were Bosniak territorial defence servicemen who surrended without putting up resistance but were then killed and their bodies thrown into a pit.

The indictment said that Stricevic, as a member of Republika Srpska’s reservist police force, committed the murders along with Bosnian Serb soldiers Milutin Babic and Obrad Ozegovic.

Neither of the other two suspects stood trial; the prosecution said that it believed that Babic was now in the United States and Ozegovic in Serbia.

The verdict can be appealed at the Bosnian Federation’s supreme court.
