The district court in the town of Doboj found Kojic, who worked for Republika Srpska’s interior ministry during the conflict, guilty of raping the woman three times in July 1992 in the village of Zasavica near Bosanski Samac.

“The trial chamber accepted the statement from the plaintiff who described in great detail what happened to her in the village of Zasevica, where non-Serbs were living in isolation,” presiding judge Radmila Stancic told the court on Tuesday.

“It caused mental problems for her that she suffers from even today and for which she has to undergo treatment,” the judge said.

Stancic explained that there were extenuating circumstances for passing a sentence below the legal minimum, citing the fact that a lot of time had passed since the crimes were committed and that the defendant is a father.

The plaintiff was told to seek compensation in a civil suit, while Kojic was relieved of having to pay court expenses because of his financial situation.

The sentence can be appealed before Republika Srpska’s supreme court.
