This will mark the beginning of another trial for genocide committed in Srebrenica.
The Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina said that it intends to examine “about 60 witnesses” and that it would need “around 120 hours or 24 working days” to present evidence.
The indictment alleges that Pelemis and Peric “planned, ordered and assisted” the murder of about 1,200 Srebrenica residents, who were originally detained in “Kula” school building in Pilica, and the murder of about 600 men who were detained in a Pilica house in Zvornik Municipality, on July 15 and 16, 1995.
When asked by the Trial Chamber if the parties had any objections concerning the composition of the Chamber, Prosecutor Kwai Hong Ip proposed that “a reserve local judge be appointed” instead of international judge Snezhana Botusharova-Doicheva, whose mandate is due to expire in December 2009.
Trial Chamber Chairman Ljubomir Kitic said that this due date was “not definite”, adding that a reserve judge would not be appointed at this stage. The Defence teams will submit any objections concerning the Chamber’s composition at a later stage.
