The Bosnian state prosecution demanded a longer jail sentence for Vitomir Rackovic, who has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for crimes committed in Visegrad under a first instance verdict. In a written appeal, Rackovic’s defense asked the court to either acquit him of charges or repeal the verdict.

Former Bosnian Serb Army serviceman Vitomir Rackovic was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the rape, illegal arrests and abuse of Bosniak civilians near Visegrad in 1992.

After a trial that has gone on for over a year, the Bosnian state court is expected to hand down a verdict in the Vitomir Rackovic case on May 11. Rackovic is on trial for war crimes committed against the civilian population in the Visegrad area.

Vitomir Rackovics defense said the prosecution failed to prove that Rackovic committed war crimes in Visegrad, and called upon the Bosnian state court to acquit him of all charges.

Presenting its closing statement at the Vitomir Rackovic trial, the Bosnian state prosecution said it had proven that Rackovic participated in the detention, rape, torture, and destruction of property of Bosniak civilians from the Visegrad area.

The presentation of evidence at the Vitomir Rackovic trial was completed today, with the reading of a revised indictment by the state prosecution.

A state prosecution witness testifying at the trial of Vitomir Rackovic said that the defendant drove a military transporter and had set up a machinegun nest at his home.

Former Bosnian Serb fighter Vitomir Rackovic is on trial for alleged attacks on several villages during the Bosnian war, as well the detainment, abuse, and rape of civilians. At todays hearing witnesses, including former fellow soldiers, testified on Rackovics wartime activities.
