Bosnia's State Investigation and Protection Agency, SIPA, arrested a suspect allegedly connected to the attack on US embassy in Sarajevo in 2011. Bosnian police arrested Munib Ahmetspahic on Thursday evening at Sarajevo Airport, sources close to the investigation told BIRN in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In closing arguments at the retrial of the Bosnian Army’s former commander in Srebrenica, Naser Oric, the defence said that he should be acquitted of killing three Serb prisoners of war in 1992. Naser Oric’s defence asked the state court in Sarajevo on Friday to acquit the former Bosnian Army commander, saying that the prosecution had not proved his guilt at the retrial.

Eight former Bosnian Army commanders and servicemen were arrested on suspicion of killing captured Croat civilians and prisoners of war in villages in the Vitez area in 1993. Bosnia’s State Investigation and Protection Agency on Thursday arrested Ibrahim Puric, Ibrahim Tarahija, Nijaz Sivro, Rusit Nurkovic, Almir Sarajlic, Sacir Omanovic, Kasim Kavazovic and Sadik Omanovic, who are all accused of wartime crimes against Croats in central Bosnia.

The search for the remaining missing persons from the wars in the former Yugoslavia is still being hindered by politics, a BIRN conference on regional cooperation and post-conflict justice was told.

Cooperation on war crimes cases between prosecutors’ offices in former Yugoslav countries happens rarely despite agreements between the states, said participants at a major regional conference organised by BIRN.

The US State Department accused the Bosnian Serb authorities of attempting to deny history by annulling a report on the 1995 Srebrenica massacres which accepted that Serb forces killed thousands of Bosniaks and breached humanitarian law.

Bosnia’s Constitutional Court rejected an appeal by former Croatian Defence Council fighter Indira Kameric, who was sentenced to four years in prison for abusing civilian detainees who were held at a football stadium.
