The defence lawyer for former Bosnian Serb reservist policeman Mico Jurisic urged the court to acquit him of committing crimes against humanity against non-Serb civilians in the Prijedor area in 1992. In closing statements at the Bosnian state court on Monday, Mico Jurisic’s defence said he should be found not guilty of participating in the persecution of the non-Serb civilian population in the Prijedor area through crimes including murders, torture, the unlawful deprivation of liberty, taking people to detention camps and other inhumane acts.

The prosecution argued that the two-year sentence given to former Croatian Defence Council brigade commander Mensur Djakic for not punishing the killer of three captured Serbs in the Brcko District in 1992 was below the legal minimum.

Two new commissions set up by Bosnia’s Serb-dominated Republika Srpska entity to examine wartime crimes in Srebrenica and Sarajevo have been accused of seeking to distort the truth to whitewash Serbs’ role in atrocities.

Concerned by the spread of radical Islamism, Bosnia adopted a five-year strategy to counter the threat in 2015. But the funds have not been allocated to implement it, according to a BIRN BiH investigation.
