We would like to hear from you - women journalists, editors, newsroom managers and freelancers - about your specific experiences in journalism: what are the major challenges you as a woman face while conducting your everyday work?

We are well aware of the fact that media outlets across the region are struggling over finances and political interference, but we also know that female media workers are usually first to be hit. We want to map challenges you face as a woman in your daily work and we need your help.

BIRN is looking to hear from women journalists from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia, who are either freelancers or employed with commercial and/or public media outlets.

The key things we want to know:

  • Do you feel you are treated differently than your male colleagues?
  • Does your newsroom/media outlet provide additional support to mothers and caretakers?
  • Would you say that you, as a woman, feel evaluated and empowered at your workplace?
  • Are there any safety mechanisms in place in your newsrooms, including support and understanding on the side of your colleagues and superiors?

If you are willing to share your experiences with us, for the sake of a coming cross-border analysis exploring perspectives of female media workers in the Western Balkans, scroll down for more information about how to take part.

Things to note:

We will not publish any documents or names without prior consent and we do not plan to use specific examples, but rather show more general, systemic problems. Your responses are secure and encrypted.

Your stories will be used to help us with an ongoing cross-border analysis.

How to take part?

To submit your experience, all you need to do is fill out this form. The questionnaire is available in English, but also in Albanian, Bosnian/Croatian/Montenegrin/Serbian and Macedonian.
