Defendants Vlado Stjepanovic, Zoran Tanasic, Zarko Milanovic, Mladen Krajisnik, Savo Mrsic, Milivoje Cobic and Milan Markovic have been charged with participating in the persecution of the Bosniak civilian population in Janja from April 1992 to September 1994.
The indictment alleges that Tanasic and Krajisnik were members of active police forces from the Janja police station, while the other defendants were reserve policemen at the same station.
According to the previously unconfirmed indictment, Tanasic, Krajisnik, Mrsic and Milovanovic beat and tortured civilians who had been brought to the police station in Janja, as well as at other locations. Among other forms of abuse, they allegedly punched civilians, kicked them while wearing military boots and struck them with batons.
The prosecution previously announced that Cobic and Markovic were charged with beating a Bosniak civilian with a rifle butt and kicking him until he fainted. The civilian died as a result.
The state prosecution has also charged Tanasic and Stjepanovic with attempting to kill a civilian by shooting at him from an automatic rifle.
