The district court in Doboj on Friday acquitted Brestovac, a former police officer in the town, of killing Muharem, Muhamed and Ismeta Aldobasic on June 20, 1992 in the Miljkovac neighbourhood of Doboj, alongside another Serb fighter, Cvjetko Sarcevic, who has since died.
Presiding judge Snezana Banjac-Lopandic said the court accepted that Brestovac was a policeman at a checkpoint in Miljkovac in 1992, but that there was insufficient evidence linking him to the murders.
“The prosecution based its indictment on the statement of [witness] Petra Aldobasic, who died in 2012. She was the only eyewitness and saw the killer in poor light,” said the judge.
She added that the prosecution also did not prove if Brestovac was seen at the checkpoint after the crime.
The verdict can be appealed.
