In her closing arguments on Monday, prosecutor Dzemila Begovic said that it had been proved that Adamovic and Lukic had participated in a joint criminal enterprise in Kljuc from May 1992 onwards.

She said that the two former fighters were guilty of imprisonment, torture and other inhuman acts carried out as part of a broad and systematic attack against the non-Serb civilian population.

“Their contribution was necessary and significant, because without their participation it would not have been possible to carry out the plan,” said Begovic.

The prosecutor said that the attacks were carried out as a part of a strategy devised by the Bosnian Serb parliament.

“The attacks were aimed against civilian population. Men were being arrested, civilians non-selectively killed,” she said.

The prosecution alleges that Lukic was commander of the territorial defence’s headquarters, while Adamovic was the deputy commander of the Kljuc battalion of the territorial defence and commander of the town’s defence headquarters.

Begovic said the court should take into consideration that at the time the defendants were in high positions, and that they have since failed to “feel remorse”.

Adamovic and Lukic were acquitted of the charges in May 2011 but the appeals chamber quashed the verdict and ordered a retrial.

Their defence teams will present their closing arguments on Tuesday.
