As the trial for crimes in “Silos” detention camp continues, the Prosecutor reads a statement given by a now-deceased witness, who during the investigation had spoken about bad conditions and beating.
Prosecutor Zorica Djurdjevic read the statement by witness Drago Vegara, who died in 2007. In his statement given to the Center for Investigation of War Crimes he said that he was taken from an agricultural field to “Silos” detention camp on May 24, 1992.
“The conditions were very bad. We had one meal per day. We ate beans. Sometimes they would put roast bones in it after having eaten the meat that was on the bones,” the witness said.
He said that he remembered “good and bad” guards, saying that indictee Mirsad Sabic and an Enver Dupovac were among the bad ones.
“They used to stick around. They represented some sort of authority,” the statement says.
Witness Drago Vegara said during the investigation that each of the detainees was beaten up at some stage.
“They would take detainees far away and beat them. We heard cries. When they came back, they were covered with blood,” witness Vegara said, adding that Becir Hujic was the Manager of the detention camp.
Becir Hujic is charged, along with Mustafa Djelilovic, Fadil Covic, Mirsad Sabic, Nezir Kazic, Halid Covic, Serif Mesanovic and Nermin Kalember, with crimes committed in “9. maj” school building, “Silos” detention camp and “Krupa” military barracks.
The trial is due to continue on August 19.
