At the 21st meeting of the Association of Court Reporters, AIS, the participants discussed possible ways of improving the training of local journalists involved in court reporting, and, in particular, reporting on war crimes proceedings.

The first part of the meeting was dedicated to the conclusions of the meeting on “Transparency of Regional and Cantonal Courts and Prosecutions,” held in Trebinje on May 26 and 27, as well as preparing a more effective agenda for the two upcoming meetings, which are supposed to take place in the Travnik and Brcko Districts by the end of 2008.

The participants also discussed how to attract a larger number of persons to participate in these meetings.

AIS members concluded that these meetings, attended by media and judicial representatives, should primarily be based on education and sharing experiences.

They also reached a conclusion that it was necessary to develop some kind of guidelines on court reporting, which the reporters in local communities could use in their work. It was mentioned that an Annex to the Press Code contains recommendations for war crimes reporting.

The Annex was prepared, among others, by AIS representatives in December 2006. The participants said the journalists should be reminded of this Annex.

In the further course of the meeting the participants spoke about the future plans of the Association, related to its expansion to local communities, financial prospects, as well as improving promotional activities through the development of various materials and the participation of AIS representatives at various journalists’ meetings and workshops.

In addition the AIS members stressed the need to hold some workshops for the Association members, if possible in September this year. These workshops would be dedicated to the strategic planning of further developing and improving the work of AIS.

Representatives of BIRN, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, as well as journalists-court reporters from BH Radio 1, Nezavisne novine, the Federal News Agency (FENA) and Justice Report participated in this meeting.

The Association of Court Reporters was established in 2005 in order to acquaint the public, through coordinated activities, with the work of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its Prosecution. AIS is financially supported by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation as part of the BIRN BiH project on “Media, Civil Society and War Crime Trials.”
