A court in Bihac has jailed two Bosnian Serbs, Goran Sovilj and Petar Galic for ten and seven years respectively for killing a Bosniak civilian, Mehmed Harambasic, and pillaging his property in Kljuc in 1992.
The verdict against the two former members of the Bosnian Serb Army, VRS, was pronounced at the end of their retrial, which the Supreme Court of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, FBiH, ordered after it had quashed a previous verdict sentencing each of them to ten years in prison.
According to the verdict, on May 31, 1992 Sovilj and Galic came to Harambasic’s house in Sanica in the municipality of Kljuc, consumed alcoholic beverages in his catering establishment and then took him outside. Sovilj was found guilty of having fired four bullets at Harambasic. The verdict says Sovilj and Galic then stole the killed man’s vehicle.
“With regard to Petar Galic, the Chamber has accepted all the allegations and actions specified in the indictment, except for the allegation that he killed Mehmed Harambasic,” trial chamber chairwoman Fikreta Hadzic said.
The parties have the right to file appeals against this verdict with the Supreme Court of the FBiH.
