The cantonal prosecution filed a request asking for Stojanovic, a former member of the Maturice Unit in the Bosnian Croat Army, to be put on trial in Croatia. Croatia is Stojanovic’s current country of residence.

“Since the suspect didn’t attend previous scheduled plea hearings, and considering he has Croatian citizenship so we can’t ask for extradition, the prosecution is asking that the case to be sent to Croatia, with the approval of the victim in the case,” the cantonal prosecution told BIRN.

The cantonal court of Novi Travnik confirmed the indictment against Marinko Stojanovic for war crimes committed against civilians in Kiseljak in February 2015.

Stojanovic and a suspect known as D.L, since deceased, forced a woman and a girl into a vehicle and drove them to the Duhre settlement near Kiseljak in July 1993.

“D.L took A into a room and she cried and called for help. Marinko Stojanovic came inside and threatened to kill her if she resists. D.L raped A and then, while threatening her with a knife, Stojanovic raped her as well and forced her to have oral sex,” the indictment reads.

The girl, according to the indictment, was in the next room during the rape, where she was watched by a member of the Croatian Defence Council.
