Prosecution Completes Evidence Presentation at Ninkovic’s Trial

In his statement given to the Doboj District Prosecution in August 2008 Jelec said that he worked with the State Security Service until the beginning of May 1992 and that Slobodan Karagic, who was accompanied by another person, arrested him on May 6, 1992.
As he said, after having returned from the battlefield, soldiers, as well as guards, used to beat prisoners in Doboj prison, where he was held until January 1993. He said that guard Stanisa slapped him and set his clothes on fire in June 1992.
He said that he and late Ilija Tipura were beaten up by a Co-operative worker, who was dressed in military uniform, on “Bosnakop” agricultural co-operative plantation.
The witness did not directly mention indictee Ninkovic in his statement.
Branislav Ninkovic, former guard in the District Prison in Doboj, is charged with having participated in the torture and abuse of arrested non-Serb civilians in the period from May 1992 to March 1993. This resulted in severe mental and physical suffering, bodily injuries and death of prisoners.
District Prosecutor Slavko Krulj gave up the examination of this witness, who lives in the United States and whose arrival in Bosnia and Herzegovina is expected in the summer of 2015.
Defence attorney Branko Ristic announced that the Defence would examine between five and seven witnesses.
The trial is due to continue on January 28.
