The Appellate Chamber quashed the verdict pronounced in September 2012, under which Mikulic was sentenced to six years in prison for having participated in the beating of Bosniak civilians in Dretelj in July and August 1993, and ordered a retrial.

The first instance verdict pronounced Mikulic guilty of having participated in the beating of Enver Grebovic in late July 1993 and ordered detainees, who were monitors in Dretelj, to beat three detainees, who were lined against a wired fence.

The Appellate Chamber confirmed the releasing part of the verdict, according to which Mikulic was found not guilty of four counts, which originally charged him with the abuse of Semir Balavac, Emir Djulic and witness S-3 in July and August 1993, as well as the beating of detainees during lunch in Dretelj and pouring water into the premises, where detainees were held.

The trial of Mikulic began in November 2011. He defended himself while at liberty. He was ordered into custody following the pronouncement of the first instance verdict.
