As said by the District Court, the renovation was done with the aim of installing equipment, which would enable recording in courtrooms and networking with a single system that would be coordinated by the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council, HJPC. In this way basic preconditions for complex proceedings in war crimes cases will be fulfilled.

Bojan Stevic, President of the District Court in Trebinje, said that the renovation had multiple benefits and that the modernization of the courtroom would reflect upon the speed and quality of trials in war crimes cases.

“A testimony via video link with Canada has already been organized in one of the cases, but we used the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina premises. In such cases and regular proceedings we shall now have a possibility to examine witnesses irrespective of their current location,” Stevic said.

The renovation of the courtroom in Trebinje is part of a nine-month project financed by the European Commission in the amount of three million KM. Six courtrooms in cantonal courts, four in district courts and courtrooms in the Brcko District Court have already been renovated within this project.
