Under the same decision, the Tribunal released Aleksandar Aleksic, whom it previously assigned to temporarily represent Mladic following his extradition to The Hague, from duty.

Lukic was appointed as Mladic’s Defence counsel for a period of 120 days. During the mentioned period the Tribunal’s Secretariat will check whether the indictee fulfills the conditions for having the Tribunal pay for his defence.

Branko Lukic, an attorney from Belgrade, is the main defence attorney of Sreten Lukic, a former high-ranking police official from Serbia, who was sentenced under a first instance verdict to 22 years in prison for crimes in Kosovo.

Lukic formerly represented Miroslav Kvocka, Milomir Stakic and Dragan Jokic, who were tried before The Hague Tribunal for crimes in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The indictment charges Mladic with genocide, crimes against humanity and violation of the laws and customs of war. He previously asked that Milos Saljic, attorney from Belgrade, be appointed as his main defence counsel, but the Secretariat declined his request because Saljic did not fulfill the conditions for that.

According to earlier announcements, Saljic and Aleksandar Mezyaev, a Law Professor from Russia, will be members of Mladic’s Defence team.

A status conference in Mladic’s case is scheduled for August 25 this year.
