At a status conference before the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Trial Chamber decided that the trial of Sasa Baricanin, who is charged with war crimes committed in the Grbavica district of Sarajevo, will begin on April 20. Following the reading of the indictment and the presentation of introductory arguments by the Prosecution and Defence, Prosecutor Behaija Krnjic announced that three witnesses who lived in Grbavica in 1992 would give their statements at the next hearing.

“Honourable Court, we shall also have a few witnesses for whom protection measures have been requested at this trial. According to the Prosecution’s plans, their examination may last for an entire day,” Prosecutor Krnjic said.

The Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina charges Baricanin, accompanied by Veselin ‘Batko’ Vlahovic, with having treated civilians, who were forcibly held in Grbavica, in an inhumane manner by causing them physical injuries and mental suffering and robbing them. The indictment alleges that they forcibly took three civilians away and killed them at an unknown location.

In addition, Vlahovic is charged with crimes committed in Vraca, Sarajevo.

The indictment alleges that Baricanin raped a woman, whom he held in an apartment, on several occasions and enabled another unidentified person to rape her.

The State Investigation and Protection Agency, SIPA, arrested Baricanin in Pale at the beginning of February this year. He has been held in custody since then.
