Week ahead: Two war crime verdicts due

On Monday, September 29 verdicts are due to be pronounced in the Zvornik and Bugojno crimes cases.

Next week, on September 29, the War Crimes Chamber of the State Court is due to pronounce a verdict against Sreten Lazarevic, Dragan Stanojevic, Mile Markovic and Slobodan Ostojic. The State Prosecution charges the four men with having participated in the detention and beating of civilians committed in the prison, offence court and “Novi izvor” buildings in Zvornik.

The verdict against Slavko Sakic is due to be pronounced on Monday. Sakic concluded a guilt admission agreement with the State Prosecution, admitting guilt for crimes against civilians committed in Bugojno in 1993, when he was a member of the Croatian Defence Countil, HVO.

The Trial Chamber accepted the agreement, which foresees that Sakic may be sentenced to an imprisonment sentence lasting between 7 and 10 years.

On the same day the Appellate Chamber of the State Court will consider the appeal filed by the Defence of Mirko (son of Spiro) Pekez, Mirko (son of Mile) Pekez and Milorad Savic, who were sentenced, by the first instance Trial Chamber, to 71 years’ imprisonment in total for war crimes against civilians committed in Jajce municipality.

Three days later the appeal, filed by the State Prosecution in lieu of the first instance verdict against Suad Kapic, for “incorrectly determined factual status and substantial violations of the Criminal Code provisions”. In April 2008 the former member of the Bosnian Army was acquitted of the charges that he participated in the capture and murder of Republika Srpska Army, VRS, members in Sanski most municipality.

On Monday, September 29 the trial is due to continue in the case of Milorad Trbic, who is charged with genocide in Srebrenica, and Marko Samardzija, who was sentenced, by a first instance verdict, to 26 years’ imprisonment for crimes committed in Kljuc.

Next week, on September 29 and October 1 the Prosecution is due to continue presenting evidence against Vinko Kondic, Bosko Lukic and Marko Adamovic, who are charged with having participated in organising a group of people and abetting them to commit genocide in Kljuc municipality in the course of 1992.

On October 1 the trials are due to continue in the case of Nisvet Gasal, Musajb Kukavica, Enes Handzic and Senad Dautovic for crimes in Bugojno municipality, and Gojko Klickovic, Jovan Ostojic and Mladen Drljaca, who are charged, by the Prosecution, with crimes committed in the Bosanska Krupa area.

On the same day and also on October 2 the trial is due to continue in the case of Krsto Savic and Milko Mucibabic, who are considered responsible, by the Prosecution, for crimes committed in the Gacko, Bileca, Kalinovik and Nevesinje areas in the course of 1992.

The trial of Suljo Karajic, former member of the Bosnian Army, who is charged with crimes committed in the Bihac area, is due to continue on October 2, just like the trial of Marko Radic, Dragan Sunjic, Damir Brekalo and Mirko Vracevic, former members of the HVO, who are charged with crimes committed in Vojno detention camp, near Mostar.

New Prosecution witnesses are due to appear at the trial of Predrag Bastah and Goran Viskovic, who are charged with crimes committed in Vlasenica, on October 2 and 3. On the same days the retrial is due to continue in the case of Kreso Lucic, who was sentenced, by a first instance verdict, to six years’ imprisonment for crimes in Kresevo municipality.

On Friday, October 3 the trials are due to continue in the case of Ratko Bundalo, Nedjo Zeljaja and Djordjislav Askraba, charged with crimes in Kalinovik, and Marko Skrobic, charged with crimes committed in Kotor-Varos.
