Week Ahead: Srebrenica genocide trial preparations

Next week a status conference for the third trial for genocide in Srebrenica is scheduled before the State Court.

More than two months ago since he pleaded not guilty to the indictment for genocide in Srebrenica, on 17 September, Vaso Todorovic a former member of the Second battalion of the Special police in Sekovici will appear at a status conference.

The State Prosecution holds Todorovic as an accomplice in the genocide committed in July 1995, after the fall of the UN safe haven of Srebrenica. According to the indictment, he participated on 13 July 1995 in the capture and murders of more than 1,000 Bosniaks in Kravica in a way that he prevented prisoners from escaping while others were shooting at them.

In front of the Appellate council of the Court on 16 September, the retrial continues of Kreso Lucic who, as former commander of the Military police of Croat Defence Council (HVO) was originally sentenced to six years imprisonment for the crimes committed in Kresevo by a first instance verdict.

In the Zrinko Pincic trial, scheduled for 15 and 16 September, the Prosecution will hear new witnesses who will talk about the crimes in Konjic, for which this ex-HVO member is indicted by the Prosecution.

On the same day and then on Wednesday 17 September, the final statement is planned for the trial of Sreten Lazarevic, Mile Markovic , Dragan Stanojevic and Slobodan Ostojic, former reserve policemen indicted for mistreating civilians in detention buildings in the Zvornik area.

The trial of Marko Radic, Dragan Sunjic, Damir Brekalo and Mirko Vracevic will continue next week on 15 and 18 September. These four ex-HVO members are held responsible by the Prosecution for crimes committed in Vojno, near Mostar, where Bosniak civilians were detained during 1993 and 1994.

On Monday September 15, the trial of Vinko Kondic, Bosko Lukic and Marko Adamovic is supposed to start. They are charged with abetting genocide and crimes against humanity in Kljuc Municipality.

The beginning of trial has been postponed several times due to the poor health of the first indictee.

New Prosecution witnesses in the Momir Savic trial will appear on 15 and 19 September. According to bill of indictment, Savic as a member of a paramilitary formation and as commander of the Third company of the Visegrad brigade of the Army of Republic Srpska (VRS), participated in the banishing, arrest, beating, murders and rapes in the Visegrad area.

The Prosecution will continue presenting evidence in the Anto Kovac tral, indicted for crimes in Vitez, committed against detained civilians in different detention sites in the area during the 1993. The trial continues on 15 and 17 September.

The trial of Predrag Kujundzic charged by the Prosecution for crimes in Doboj, continues on 16 and 18 September, while the Prosecution will continue presenting evidence against Gojko Klickovic, Jovan Ostojic and Mladen Drljaca on 16 and 17 September. The three are indicted for participating in a joint criminal effort during 1992 in the Bosanska Krupa area.

Three new witnesses in the trial of Krsto Savic and Milko Mucibabic will give their statement on Wednesday 17 September and the trial continues the day after. In accordance with the Prosecution claims, Savic and Mucibabic participated in a series of crimes in the Nevesinje, Gacko, Kalinovik and Bileca municipalities.

Rade Veselinovic, a former military policeman in the VRS, indicted for the torture and murder of civilians in the Hadzici area, will appear in front of the Court on Wednesday 17 September.

On Thursday 18 and Friday 19 September, the trial will continue for the crimes committed in Vlasenica for which the Prosecution hold responsible Predrag Bastah and Goran Viskovic, former members of the police reserves and the VRS.

On Friday the trial of Ratko Bundalo, Nedjo Zeljaja and Djordjislav Askraba indicted for crimes in the Kalinovik area during 1992 and 1993 will also continue.
