The life of a calm and cheerful girl was destroyed during two nights in 1992. Suzana J. was 14 years old when she was raped eight times by a group of soldiers. Today she says she has no reason to smile, because images of what she survived continue to haunt her.

H.S. spent nearly two years in the Rasadnik detention camp in Rogatica. She told BIRN-Justice Report about how she survived the camp, and the fate of the other captives. When she found out after her release that her four sons had been murdered, she was completely broken. Today, the 80 year old has no one to open her door to.

In the Dobrinja neighbourhood in Sarajevo, Sadeta Dervisevic risked her own life to help her fellow citizens - many of whom were children - survive the shells and snipers that rained down on the city during the Bosnian war.

A woman from Srebrenica, who was a 15-year-old in 1992, was repeatedly raped, abused and assaulted in the then abandoned houses in Bratunac. Those who perpetrated the act have not yet been brought to justice. That is the reason why we are protecting her identity, but this is her story in its entirety.

In July 1995, after Bosnian Serb forces overran Srebrenica, 18-year-old H.T. was raped at a battery factory in nearby Potocari. It was 40 days she had given birth, and she was still bleeding. Her rapist knocked her unconscious before sexually assaulting her.

Some of the women who were raped by Bosnian Serb soldiers at the time of the Srebrenica massacres in 1995 have since managed to conquer their fears and speak out.

The pain she feels for having been raped after the fall of Srebrenica in July 1995 is reflected on her face too. However, she says that she no longer cries but prefers to spend her time alone.

For a year-and-a-half, F.K. was mentally and physically abused in the Rasadnik detention camp in Rogatica, where she was repeatedly raped and forced to have sex with another detainee. She says that thanks to her faith, she stayed sane.

When the Serbs took away Musan Sarancics wife, Sabira, in 1992, he thought her gender might protect her from the worst. But he was wrong; he never saw her again.

Asima Memics son, Asmir, boarded a bus from Prijedor to Travniik as part of an exchange in July 1992. He never arrived, and only a single limb has ever been recovered.
