The Commission for Investigating the Sufferings of Serbs in Sarajevo, one of two controversial commissions to probe wartime events set up by Bosnia’s Serb-dominated Republika Srpska, held its first session, but declined to give any details.

Bosnia’s Serb-dominated entity Republika Srpska has appointed Israeli historian and Holocaust researcher Gideon Greif to head its controversial commission probing crimes committed in Srebrenica during the Bosnian war.

Former policeman Mladjen Vasiljevic was sentenced to three years in prison for shooting a civilian dead in the Ribnik area in August 1992. The District Court in Banja Luka on Tuesday convicted ex-policeman Mladjen Vasiljevic of committing crimes against the civilian population in the Ribnik area.

Experts engaged by the Bosnian Serb authorities will stage reconstructions of the deadly blasts at Sarajevo’s Markale marketplace in 1994 and 1995 and an attack on a bread queue in 1992. The attacks that killed scores of people in Sarajevo during the war will be reconstructed by experts in ballistics, explosives and forensics at a training ground in Nikinci, near Ruma in Serbia, in what Bosnian Serb officials said was an attempt to establish what happened.

Former Bosnian Serb soldier Radomir Sevarika was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for participating in the beating and murder of Croat prisoners in Knezevo in October 1992. The District Court in Banja Luka on Friday found Sevarika guilty of seizing and beating the two prisoners, and then killing one of them.

Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik said international experts will investigate the massacres at the Markale market and in Vase Miskina Street in Sarajevo, as well as in Kapija in Tuzla, to determine whether the crimes were investigated properly.
