The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina confirmed an indictment charging Serb ex-fighters Jovan and Goran Popovic with participating in the persecution of Bosniak civilians from the village of Rodic Brdo in the Visegrad municipality from April to September 1992.

They are charged with taking part in killings, forced relocations, illegal imprisonment, rape, sexual slavery, forced disappearances, the destruction and removal of property, causing severe suffering and physical harm and other inhuman acts.

Prosecutor Seid Marusic asked for the men to be placed under house arrest and banned from seeing witnesses.

“A sentence of at least 10 years in prison may be a motive for the accused to make an escape,” said Marusic.

He said that some of the witnesses from Rodica Brdo near Visegrad, where the indicted men live, are suffering from fear and anxiety.

But the men’s defence lawyers objected, saying that house arrest could endanger the survival of the defendants and their families.

The Court will make a decision on the proposal at a later stage.
