Srdjan Radulj, Deputy Minister of Justice of BiH, says that the building of this prison will lead to significant saving of money, which the Ministry now pays for accommodation of convicts, who are held in other facilities due to the non-existence of a state-level prison.

According to the prison building project, the facility will occupy about 24,000 square metres and should have the most up-to-date and safest prison protection in the Balkans. It should be able to accommodate more than 300 convicts and detainees of the Court of BiH.

The building of the prison began back in 2007, but only a concrete protection wall has been built since. The Managing Board of the Unit charged with implementation of this project say that, despite the fact that financial resources were available, the works have not begun sooner due to complex procedures.

The total value of the project is KM 77 million. A part of the financial resources has been provided from the budget of BiH institutions, while the remaining amount has been donated by the European Commission and the Governments of Sweden and the United States.

Radulj said that the building of the prison was expected to be completed in two years, when the first convicts would be accommodated in that facility.
