“He may be held in custody for a maximum of three years,” the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina says.

At the beginning of the evidence presentation process the Prosecution of BiH requested the Trial Chamber to order Popovic into custody because border police caught him as a co-driver in a car at the border crossing with Serbia on June 16.

The indictee was previously banned from travelling outside the country. His Defence attorney Milos Peric said that this was an unfortunate combination of circumstances.

He explained that the indictee and a friend of his went shopping and that they presented a bill from a shop located near the border crossing.

“He has regularly responded to invitations by the Court and Prosecution. He does not have a motive to flee. He does not have citizenship of Serbia,” Peric said.

The Prosecution of BiH charges Goran Popovic, former guard in Uzamnica detention camp, with having participated in the abuse, beating and torture, as well as sexual abuse of men and women.
