EU Allocates 15 Million for New Judges and Prosecutors

“The resources should become operational on February 15. The Project covers 16 prosecutors’ offices and seven courts in BiH. It is planned that the Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina will get five new prosecutors,” the HJPC said.
The resources have been secured from an IPA project for 2012/2013. The project aims at reducing the number of pending war-crimes cases in prosecutors’ offices by 50 percent within a five-year period.
According to the plans, the resources will be used for employing a certain number of judges and prosecutors, hiring additional staff members for a limited period of time in order to provide support to judges and prosecutors and financing other activities related to examination of witnesses, conducting expert examinations, procurement of necessary equipment and so on.
The HJPC mentioned that the Project would be implemented through budget support to judicial institutions, adding that this was the first time the EU would use this method of financing in a pre-accession country.
Thirteen new prosecutors were hired by the Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina recently as part of efforts aimed at strengthening judicial institutions’ capacities for working on war-crimes cases. Financial resources for this were secured from the Bosnia and Herzegovina budget.
