“Had the local residents had weapons, they would have defended themselves,” said witness Slobodan Zupljanin, former Commander of the Second Battalion with the 122nd Light Infantry Brigade of the Republika Srpska Army, VRS. He said that one soldier, who was on leave, was present in the village.

Zupljanin, who began testifying on June 4 this year, said that his unit had previously been armed by the then Yugoslav National Army, JNA.

According to the State Prosecution’s charges, Fikret Planincic, Rasim Lisancic, Sead Menzil and Mirsad Vatrac, former members of the Territorial Defence of Kotor-Varos, are charged with having participated in an attack on Serdari village on September 17, 1992, when 16 Serb civilians were killed.

The witness said that no rapes, abuse or the burning of houses happened during combat in the Kotor-Varos area.

The trial is due to continue on June 25.
