Prosecution Asks for Custody Extension

The Bosnian State Prosecution has asked for custody extension of Frano Vulic, who is charged with crimes in Capljina.

Prosecutor Remzija Smailagic explained that custody is warranted since the defendant might flee.

“The defendant has Croatian citizenship and he lives near Grude, where he could easily cross the order without documents,” said the prosecutor.

The defence team objected to the proposal, claiming it was unjustified and unwarranted.

“My defendant has shown no inclination to flee. Dual citizenship is not enough to extend custody,” said Irena Pehar.

Judge Zoran Bozic said the decision will be made at a later stage.

He also said that this case could be sent to one of the Cantonal courts, and that this decision will also be made.

The State prosecutor’s office on Wednesday charged former military policeman Vulic with killing three Bosniak men at the Dretelj prison camp in Capljina in the south of the country on July 14, 1993.

Vulic, who served during wartime with the Fifth Military Police Company of the Croatian Defence Council, HVO, is accused of shooting the detainees with an automatic rifle.

Vulic was arrested on February 7 and has been held in custody ever since then.
