Grujic: Bosnian Serb Acquitted of Zvornik War Crimes

The Bosnian state court found fighter Slobodan Grujic not guilty of participating in the murder of ten Bosniak civilians in the north-eastern Zvornik municipality in 1992. The trial chamber in Sarajevo ruled on Thursday that the prosecution failed to present enough convincing evidence to prove that the defendant, a member of the Baljkovica unit of the Bosnian Serb Army, was an accessory to the murders on May 10, 1992.

“The trial chamber established beyond reasonable doubt that the civilians were deprived of their lives in the [Pandurica] region of the village of Molitviste, but could not conclude that Grujic shot the civilians,” said presiding judge Jasmina Kosovic.

Although the defendant was seen standing by the Bosniak victims, who were tied up before they were killed, Kosovic said that the trial chamber took into special account a statement from protected witness ‘A’, who survived the execution, and who said that an unknown soldier came and started shooting at the civilians.

“[The witness] did not see whether Slobodan Grujic was shooting, nor did he tell anyone about it,” explained Kosovic.

The verdict can be taken to appeal.
