The Bosnian state prosecutor, Munib Halilovic, had initially proposed 99 witnesses but at the status conference held on Monday, said he would give up some of them in order to make the trial more efficient.
Rade Golic, the defendant’s lawyer, requested that the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina appoints an additional defender because of the complexity of the case.
Golic said he would discuss the defence’s evidence after the prosecution ended its evidence presentation.
According to the prosecution, Vlaco was, as a part of the Joint Criminal Enterprise, the warden of the camps known as “Bunker”, “Sonja”, “Planja’s House”, “Naka’s Garage” and in other facilities.
He is charged with establishing a system of punishing the imprisoned civilians in those facilities.
“Prisoners were murdered, tortured and abused. They were forced to hard labour and into a human shield, where many of them were killed,” said the indictment.
Among other things, Vlaco is charged with beating and abusing prisoners, raping them in the Kon-Tiki pension, and knowing and approving of crimes committed by other soldiers, policemen or paramilitaries.
He has been extradited to Bosnia from Montenegro early this year and has been held in custody ever since.
