Koricanske stijene: People Killed in Canyon

An additional witness testifying in defence of Dusan Jankovic, who is charged with crimes committed at Koricanske stijene, says the indictee did not escort the civilians who were shot on Mount Vlasic on August 21, 1992. Vladimir Sobot, who was apprehended after having failed to respond to a court summons, said he was in a police vehicle escorting a convoy of civilians, adding that protected witness K2 and Miroslav Paras rode with him.

“The police Golf was in front of the convoy of civilians on their way from Prijedor to Vlasic. Dusan Jankovic was not in the vehicle. I did not see him on that day at all. I think that Jankovic was Assistant Chief at the time, but I do not know what his tasks were,” said Sobot, a former traffic policeman.

The Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina has charged Jankovic, Zoran Babic, Milorad Radakovic, Milorad Skrbic and Zeljko Stojnic with escorting a convoy of civilians who were transported from Prijedor to Travnik on August 21, 1992. The indictment alleges that about 200 men were separated from other convoy passengers on Mount Vlasic and shot at Koricanske stijene.

The Prosecution considers that Jankovic was Commander of the Police Station in Prijedor, while the other indictees were members of the Interventions Squad with the same Police Station.

Although he escorted the convoy, Sobot said he only found out on the following day that some men had been killed “in the canyon”. Answering the Trial Chamber’s questions, he said he did not see the men being separated from the convoy nor did he hear the shooting.

“I was not present when they separated them. I do not know anything about it. K2 and I stayed in the car, while Paras got on the first bus. We waited for him for about half an hour,” the witness said.

Miroslav Paras, former Commander of the Interventions Squad, has since died.

Following the examination of the additional witness, indictee Jankovic’s Defence included 34 documents in the case file in an attempt to prove that the indictee was not Commander of the Police Station in Prijedor and completed the presentation of its evidence.

The trial is due to continue on November 23, when the Defence of indictee Milorad Skrbic will examine two additional witnesses.
