They heard later on that the civilians in the convoy had been killed.
The two witnesses said that Jankovic was not in the police vehicle which allegedly led the convoy, saying they would “have certainly noticed him”.
The Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina has charged Jankovic, Zoran Babic, Milorad Radakovic, Milorad Skrbic and Zeljko Stojnic with having escorted a convoy of civilians from Prijedor to Travnik on August 21, 1992. The indictment alleges that they separated about 200 men from the rest of the convoy passengers and shot them at Koricanske stijene.
The indictment alleges that Jankovic was Chief of the Public Safety Station in Prijedor and the other indictees were members of the Interventions Squad with the same Station.
“Vladimir Sobot, Miroslav Paras and protected witness K2 were riding in the police vehicle leading the convoy,” witness Radic said. [Author’s note: Paras has since died]
When asked by the Prosecution and Trial Chamber why they can recall this specific convoy, the two men said they remember August 21 as it is a religious holiday, while Prodan also said this was the last and biggest convoy.
Former policeman Zdravko Torbica, who also testified at this hearing, said that Jankovic did not perform “any important function” in the summer of 1992.
“Jankovic was involved in the procurement of fuel, vehicle registration plates and so on… He worked in the Material and Technical Issues Office at the time,” Torbica explained.
Jankovic’s Defence examined Zivko Kos, former member of the Serbian Democratic Party, SDS. The witness said that Jankovic was not appointed as Chief of the Public Safety Station in Prijedor in March 1993 because he was not a member of the SDS.
The trial is due to continue on October 26, when two more additional witnesses will testify in defence of Jankovic.
