The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina rendered a decision, ordering termination of custody and imposing certain prohibiting measures against Ranko and Rajko Vukovic, who are charged with crimes against humanity in Foca municipality.
The prohibiting measures include a ban on leaving their place of residence, temporary seizure of their travel and personal documents, as well as an obligation to report to the Public Safety Station in Foca twice a week.
In February this year a first instance verdict was pronounced, finding the Vukovic brothers guilty of the murder of Avdija Hukara and Mejra Bekrija committed in Podkolun village, Foca municipality, in May 1992. They were sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment each. By the same verdict Ranko Vukovic was acquitted of the charges alleging that he raped one person.
Both parties filed appeals with the Appellate Chamber of the State Court, which revoked the verdict in September 2008 and ordered a retrial to be conducted.
The Appellate Chamber upheld the Defence attorneys’ appeals and decided to revoke the convicting part of the verdict. It refused the Prosecution’s appeal as unfounded and confirmed the acquitting part of the verdict.
