Arrested in Croatia for Crimes in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The State Attorney’s Office of the Republic of Croatia, DORH, announced that the Croat citizens were arrested due to a suspicion that they committed war crimes against the civilian population in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1993.
“There is a ground for suspicion that the suspects, former members of the Croatian Defence Council, humiliated and physically and mentally abused a large number of detained Bosniak civilians, who were held in detention camps, causing them bodily injuries. They are charged with having caused death of a detained civilian by such actions,” an announcement issued by DORH says.
The Attorney’s Office in Split requested the District Court to order the suspects into custody due to a danger that they might flee, and the gravity of the crime.
“The investigation judge has partially accepted the proposal and ordered the suspects into investigation prison due to existence of particularly grave circumstances of the crime. This State Attorney’s Office will appeal the rejecting part of the decision,” the announcement says.
The Attorney’s Office and District Court were not able to provide Justice Report with additional information about ordering the suspects into custody.
The arrest took place two days after a meeting attended by chief prosecutors of Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. During the meeting held in Sarajevo the prosecutors agreed to speed up the processing of war crimes.
