A Swedish court has sentenced Ahmet Makitan to five years in prison for crimes committed in Dretelj detention camp, near Capljina – his attorney Ola Salomonsson confirmed.

Attorney Salomonsson said that the Court ordered Makitan to pay 1.5 million Swedish Krona (324,000 KM or 165,800 Euro) as compensation to victims.

“After I have read the verdict, which contains about 250 pages, I shall decide, together with my client, if we shall file an appeal,” Salomonsson said.

The Swedish Prosecution charged Makitan, former member of the Croatian Armed Forces, HOS, and a guard in Dretelj detention camp, Capljina municipality, with having participated in the abuse of 21 Serb civilians from May to August 1992.

Makitan moved to Sweden after the end of the war and obtained Swedish citizenship in 2006.

Police arrested Makitan in Sweden in January 2010. He has been held in custody since.
