Officers from the Bosnian State Investigation and Protection Agency arrested Peljto, one of the country’s best-known sportsmen, in Sarajevo on Monday.
After questioning Peljto, they will deliver him to the Brcko district police.
No further information about his alleged crimes has yet been made public.
Peljto won his IBF cruiserweight world title in 2000, in the town of Tuzla, 70 kilometres away from where he was born.
The ex-boxer was also a candidate for the People’s Assembly, the local parliament in Bosnia’s Serb-led entity Republika Srpska in 2010. He stood for the Bosniak-dominated Party of Democratic Action.
In 2009, he also took part in a World March for Peace and Nonviolence on its Balkan route between Istanbul and Geneva.
“Dialogue is the better way for the future… I, and the Bosnian people, are in a better position than anyone else to know what war is like. Nobody should have to face weapons,” he said in an interview at the time.
