Witness with a Piece of Paper

Testifying at the trial for crimes against Serbs in Kladanj, a State Prosecution witness reads Zijad Hamzic’s first and last name from a piece of paper, saying that he was the person who hit one civilian.

Stanimir Trisic said that he was not sure about the name of the person, whom he accused, among other things, of having hit a civilian in Lupoglavo village and ordered others to get on a small truck before being detained in Stupari.

“I cannot remember and differentiate between Nijaz and Zijad,” said the witness, aged 86.

He explained that he recently asked a person to provide him with the indictee’s first and last name so he “would not mix the names”.

Testifying at the trial Trisic recalled the events that took place in late May, when a village, in which 26 people stayed, was surrounded. He said that they gathered in front of Sreten Milosevic’s house and that they were examined about weapons.

The witness said that Zijad hit Velizar Gavric with his fists after he had brought the weapons and said that “not only all Serbs, but even dogs belonging to Serbs, should be killed”.

“He gave all orders. Safet kept quiet,” he said, adding that he handed a rifle to Safet Mujcinovic.

The witness said that Nijaz Hamzic ordered them to gather in front of Sreten Milosevic’s house.

According to the charges, Zijad Hamzic, former Commander of the Territorial Defence Company in Stupari, hit Velizar Gavric, when he said that he did not know where his son, who had left the village earlier, had left the gun.

He is charged with having given an order to load the civilians onto a truck and drive them to Stupari, where they were detained.

According to the witness’ testimony, the remaining Serbs were taken to a school building in Stupari, where their examination continued. After that they were detained in nearby education workers’ buildings.

Trisic said that he first met Zijad Hamzic in May 1992, when he came to Lupoglavo before the village was surrounded.

“He examined me where the guns were,” Trisic said, adding that Hamzic was dressed in camouflage uniform and that he commanded the military forces from Stupari.

The witness said that he was exchanged after having spent 14 months in the educational workers’ building. As he said, while he was detained, a person took him to the school building for an examination. While he was there, he met Kahro Vejzovic, who told the person, who had brought him: “Do not touch that man”. After that he was taken back.

Vitomir Milosevic, who said that nobody examined anybody in front of Sreten Lazarevic’s house in Lupoglavo, testified at this hearing too. He said that they were ordered to get on a truck and that they were then transported to Stupari and detained in the educational workers’ buildings.

“I do not know who told us to get on the truck,” the witness said.

Mujcinovic, Hamzic and Vejzovic are on trial, along with Selman Busnov, Nusret Muhic, Ramiz Halilovic, Nedzad Hodzic, Hariz Habibovic and Osman Gogic, for having committed crimes in Kladanj.
