Under a Resolution adopted by the UN Security Council on July 7, 2009, the mandate of judges with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, ICTY, has been extended till the end of 2010 or till “the completion of the ongoing cases”.
The Security Council rendered this decision in order to “stimulate the ICTY to complete its work in an expeditious manner”.
The Resolution extends the mandates of 11 permanent judges and several intermediate, ad litem, judges.
The Security Council will reconsider, before December 31, 2009, the mandate of appellate judges, which was extended by a resolution adopted in 2008, in order to assess the progress in implementing the exit strategy of the Hague Tribunal.
According to the Strategy, the Tribunal is due to complete its work in 2010. However, Tribunal officials have indicated that the last trial may end in 2012, while the Appellate Chamber may have to function until 2015.
Tribunal President Patrick Robinson addressed the UN Security Council at the beginning of June this year, saying that it was necessary to extend the mandate of judges in order to enable the Tribunal to complete its tasks.
