The Court of BiH has taken custody of war crimes suspect Milorad Trbic in Sarajevo, following an earlier referral by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).

According to the existing regulations, he should appear before the War Crimes Chamber within the next 24 hours. He will be put under custody and the indictment will then be adjusted to local legislation.

Trbic is a former security officer of Zvornik Brigade, Republika Srpska Army. He is indicted for complicity in the genocide committed in Srebrenica in July 1995. The ICTY indictment alleges that Trbic is responsible for the execution of around 1,000 Bosniaks in Orahovac near Srebrenica on 13 July 1995.

The ICTY prosecution had requested that the case be transferred to Sarajevo, and the indictee agreed. However, the local authorities objected to such decision, expressing doubts about the indictee’s health and claiming that it lacked suitable facilities.

Trbic was originally included in the same indictment together with seven officers of the Army and Police of Republika Srpska who are currently being processed in The Hague. The indictment against him was separated from the joint one in June 2006. He surrendered in April 2005.

This is the sixth case referred to the Court of BiH by the ICTY. Two trials for crimes committed after the fall of Srebrenica are ongoing before the War Crimes Chamber in Sarajevo.
