Protected Witness’ Status Solved

The witness’ statement, saying that he wants to testify without protection measures, although he was granted the status of protected witness before the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, was presented to the Trial Chamber in Bijeljina, as well as the Defence of indictee Dejan Radojkovic.

Dejan Radojkovic, former Commander of the Third Squad with the Special Brigade of Republika Srpska police, is charged with having opened a burst of fire, along with other members of his Squad, who were guarding the trunk road between Bratunac and Konjevic Polje, at several Bosniak men, who were trying to flee Srebrenica in 1995.

The indictment alleges that, one person, who was wounded in the shooting, was left lying in a trench by the side of the road during the night without being offered medical assistance. In the morning hours Radojkovic went back to that place and shot the wounded by firing a bullet from his gun.

The continuation of the trial of Radojkovic was postponed three times due to problems related to the status of this witness. The Defence of the indictee insisted on cross-examining the witness, but the Bijeljina Court does not have the capacities for providing conditions for examination of protected witnesses.

After that the Prosecution in Bijeljina took a statement from the witness, who said that he would testify without the protection measures.

The trial is due to continue on December 26.
